Developed by Linden Labs, Second Life (SL for short) has engaged millions of users through a free downloadable online viewer. Users assume a SL persona, or avatar, as a "resident" and then explore such diverse worlds as virtual theaters, realistic hospital simulations, and eye-popping worlds of science, history and art. Additionally, your avatar will interact with other avatars through voice, motion, and text.

This course gives six hours of hands-on instruction. While not a technical course, students will learn fundamentals of creating avatars, environments, and objects and be introduced to the power of scripting. Students will learn to take photographs and make SL movies, an art form known as machinima. The course will conclude with explorations into applications of SL in education, business, social networks and visual arts.

November 22, December 6 & 13
2:00-4:00 p.m.
CBIH room 230
$85 for this six hour class

To register, call 423-697-3100.

Instructors: Larry Miller, PhD, Learning Strategist, Erlanger Health System, and Andrew Duncan, Programmer Analyst, Chattanooga State Technical Community College.

Pay over the phone with a VISA, MasterCard, or Discover card. Like so many of the great Web 2.0 applications, Facebook wasn’t created by some huge software company. Mark Zuckerberg, now the 24-year-old C.E.O of Facebook, started it in his dorm room at Harvard (in 2004) and the site quickly amassed nine million users. Initially, Facebook was restricted to college students, or at least to those with a .edu E-mail domain. It competes with MySpace and has rapidly gained popularity, especially since the .edu requirement was dropped in

As is typical of Web 2.0, social networking is at the heart of Facebook. Users can join groups (networks) organized by city, workplace, school, or hobby – or you can start your own group. For example, there is a group called NICU Nurses with hundreds of Facebook users and a new group Erlanger Health System with only a few. It is simple to add friends and send them messages, and update your own personal profile. Many Facebook people add photos or videos as well.

Facebook underwent a major upgrade a few months ago. Long-time users were upset, but I really like the new features. The biggest change was with the News Feed, a built-in service that actively broadcasts changes in a user’s page to every one of his or her friends. The News Feed has been described as “like a social gazette from the 18th century” giving one a long list of up-to-the-minute stream of everything that’s going on about their friends, around the clock, all in one place.

Frankly, Facebook can be addicting. It can also border on annoying. However, I really feel like I have been in touch with many friends and relatives in a new way that has been a lot of fun. Interestingly enough, the biggest growth for Facebook is no longer among the young. Facebook has really caught on among boomers and others. If you sign up, you can “friend” me by searching for Lawrence G. These gadgets vary from the useful to the whimsical. For example, on my iGoogle page, I have the time and date; a list I created of frequently used Websites as bookmarks; a Google news feed with the 5 top stories; the weather in lovely Hixson, TN; a quick search area for Wikipedia; a link to my Gmail; and the Google driving directions tool. You can create a second page on iGoogle with an additional tab, and I have some other things on this.

To get started, launch www.google.com. Then click at the top of the page on “more.” This will present a pull-down menu, from which you select “even more” at the bottom. This will bring you to “More Google Products” where you see a list on the left under “Search.” Go down to iGoogle and click to get started. You can “add stuff” from your new iGoogle start page – the link is on the far right side. Once you have selected the gadgets you want, you have the ability to customize the look with themes and also drag the individual elements around on the start page to your heart’s content.

Lawrence G. Generally it's not about the number of connections you may have or connecting for connecting's sake. Your network should be about quality of knowledge, resources, skills and advocacy that LinkedIn can help unlock.”

A true social network, you build your connections by first creating a profile based upon your education, work history, community service, awards, etc. Each area of the profile can be an opportunity to connect with other. The other main strategy is to connect with groups. For example, I belong to several groups, including Chattanoogans, Professional Second Lifers, and MERLOT. I cannot tell you how many people I have reconnected with through LinkedIn, but it has surprised me. Of course, you can E-mail within from within the environment. A primary activity within LinkedIn is related to looking for jobs. Apparently, many large companies use LinkedIn for talent recruitment.

One of my favorite tech Bloggers, Guy Kawasaki, has written a very good piece, Ten Ways to Use LinkedIn. BTW, I have added Guy’s Blog to the Blog List below.

Lawrence G. They invite you to "please touch: create or join a wiki. . . build a community around whatever you love" You have probably known of Wikipedia - it's the online encyclopedia that is literally created by a community of users. Wikipedia has grown rapidly into one of the largest reference sources, attracting at nearly a billion users in 2008. There are some other wiki-generators, but I really like Wetpaint for its look and easy of use. You can watch several videos to find out more here.

Wikis are often used by groups to create a content-based Website with a restricted community of users – in other words, a private wiki. However, like other Web 2.0 applications, Wetpaint can take to existing wikis that may be something to join or at least to build from. In addition to being a tool to create a social website that anyone can easily edit and contribute to, there are many existing Wikis that can be accessed. For example, you can see the Efficient MD Wiki or WikiBirdFlu.

http://www.wetpaint.com/

Lawrence G. Fortunately a lot of information can be given in a single photograph, enhancing the limitations of five photographs for your story. Location, time, and atmosphere aid viewer imagination. Keep standards of pictorial beauty, but pack as many story telling elements in one photograph as possible to develop an action.

1st photo: establish characters and location.

2nd photo: create a situation with possibilities of what might happen.

3rd photo: involve the characters in the situation.

4th photo: build to probable outcomes

5th photo: have a logical, but surprising, end.

This is a real challenge – the brevity and succinctness of the stories that are accepted into the pool are truly impressive. Sure, there are some that are lame, or at least puny, but try it yourself. Teachers might consider this as a possible student project.

Lawrence G. Second Life is an amazing online virtual reality environment. It is simulated 3-D and has the look and feel of a game environment. In my opinion, a virtual reality world like Second Life may become on of the truly significant advances in the way we teach and learn. However, I must admit that I have had some reticence about sharing my interest in Second Life (also known as SL) for three reasons: 1) it is sometimes difficult for some to see the value or utility of this immersive, 3D virtual world, 2) it is not available to all as it requires a decent PC and some networks, including Erlanger's, have SL blocked, 3) finally, it is just simple a bit weird. No. it’s actually very weird.
However, I encourage you to look at SL from the perspective of its power as a learning environment. Second Life has established itself in virtual classrooms for major colleges and universities, including Harvard, Vassar, Pepperdine, Drexel, Rice, University College Dublin, Elon University, Ohio University, Ball State, New York University, University of Houston, and Stanford University. And, there are some significant applications that have been developed specifically for healthcare education.
A great deal of information on educational applications in SL can be found at SimTeach, the official Second Life Education Wiki. Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. SL was first opened to the public in 2003. I started with creating my avatar – this is a character one creates to enter SL - on March, 2006 and there were approximately 350,000 residents who had already joined. Today, it has grown explosively and is inhabited by a total of 9,258,210 Residents from around the globe.

Check this out – but not at Erlanger. Look for me by searching for my avatar, Lorenzo Stork.

Lawrence G. is a service that creates free, easy-to-use Web pages that help family and friends communicate when a loved one is receiving care. In simple terms, CarePages, through Erlanger’s partner Revolution Health, can change a patient’s healthcare Erlanger has good company in the use of CarePages. Other medical facilities that use this system include the Cleveland Clinic, UCLA
When a loved one is hospitalized or receiving care, it can be difficult to communicate the situation to all those who might care be concerned. With CarePages, updates are shared via email automatically and visitors can leave messages for the patient and family on the Web page. Patients and their loved ones receive emotional support during a time of need through the Photo Gallery for captioned pictures as well as the Message Board for messages of support.

Since security and privacy in the hospital environment are essential, CarePages Email and telephone customer support and
real time feedback is available. A very nice feature is called CareCompliment. This feature enable patients to recognize Erlanger staff for providing excellent care

Create a CarePage Try Blogger

About five years ago I was at a meeting in California where I heard people talking about “blogging” and “blogs.” I quickly grasped that it was some form of writing that was distributed on the World Wide Web. I stopped at the local Border’s Books and found a thin book titled The Weblog Handbook: Practical Advice on Creating and Maintaining Your Blog, by Rebecca Blood. Upon my return home, I passed the book on to my sons, then 13 and 18 years of age. A few days later, the boys showed me their new Blog. Lesson learned: Sometime the quickest way to learn about a new technology is to let your kids figure it out.

Right now, you are reading one of my Web logs or Blogs. To me, Blogging is a quick, easy way to create content on the Web. In basic terms, a Blog is a web site where you write content on an ongoing basis. Thus, my content is readily accessible to anyone with Internet access using a browser, most likely Internet Explorer or Firefox (my preference). The Web 2.0 tool I use is Blogger – part of the many Web tools from Google. Blogger is simple to use and it is free.

To get started your first create a free account. Next, you name your Blog and then choose a template from a large selection of designs. Once you have the look set, you add written content by “posting” to you Blog site. You can also add some basic graphics and create a list of hot links. Your newest stuff shows up at the top, so your visitors can read what's new first. Older content is still viewable, either by scrolling down or by clicking on archive links. One of the best things about a Blog is that all of the content is available at one place. On this Blog, I also encourage people to go directly to Web tools that I have written on by clicking on resource links (top left).

Visitors may comment on any posting. But, Blogger has some limitations. The Blogger who sets it up is the only one who can directly post on that Blog. Also, Blogger is not very friendly to Rich Media, such as video. There are plenty of Blogging tools out there, but the more powerful ones, such as TypePad or WordPress are more complex and they require a modest payment. Blogger can get you up and going quickly.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uterlanger.blogspot.com/2007/04/why-not-blog-try-blogger.html' title='Why not a Blog? It is very easy to switch between other quiz formats, such as fill-in, multiple choices, true-false and matching. It is also possible to flip the terms with the definitions and test again.

Quizlet also supports groups that can create and share sets. There is a group for medical students that is collecting useful sets in one place - human anatomy, pathology, pharmacology etc. Thus, Quizlet supports medical students who desire to interact and study together. It is possible to create groups and sets that are private or even restricted to individuals, but much of the material is open to all.

This is a link to a Medical Diagnostic Procedures quiz set. This uses a “scatter” format where terms and definitions are all scattered on a blank page. Using your mouse, you drag the term onto its definition. If this is a correct match, then the term and definition vanish. The goal is to very quickly make all the terms and definitions go away. When this is accomplished, you get the timing and are encouraged to try again.

Quizlet is only 500 days old, but already has 8,551 registered users, 538,396 scores logged, 258,820 terms entered, 36,693 discussion messages sent, and 6,998 sets made. Perhaps the most remarkable thing is that this application was created by a fifteen-year old who was looking for a more interesting way to study French vocabulary. Well done!

Lawrence G. Of course, the free version does not offer all the features of the paid service. Also, your results will only be available for 10 days. If you are interested in using the UTCOM/Erlanger account for conducting a survey, contact Larry Miller (423-778-3821 or larry.miller@erlanger.org)

You may also consider other Web-based survey tools, such as StellarSurvey or SurveyMonkey

Zoomerang http://info.zoomerang.com/

Lawrence G. With Skype’s bookmark function, you can find the dialogue later to sustain a persistent chat.

Another feature I have not tried is Skypecast. This creates a large online conference call with up to100 people. As a MERLOT member, you can: create your own personal collection of learning resources from a repository of over 15,000 materials. With more than 40,000 members, this is truly a community of peers with a passion for online learning. Through MERLOT, you may share advice and expertise about education with colleagues; contribute your own learning materials, comments on learning resource you've used add an assignment to a learning material.
I have found a great deal of useful educational material through MERLOT. In MERLOT, you can search for a specific topic or visit a Discipline Community. These communities include: Biology, Business, Chemistry, Criminal Justice, Engineering, Health Sciences, History, Information Technology, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, Teacher Education, Teaching and Technology, and World Languages. The amount of material specific to medical education has grown significantly over the four years I have used it. There is even a nice unit on Teaching Health Sciences with Technology was developed by the Health Sciences Editorial Board to assist instructors using MERLOT materials.

What really makes MERLOT effective is that the material is peer reviewed by editorial boards of content experts. This really keeps out the junk. Check out the unit called Neuroscience for Kids – very nice. A nice feature is that you can develop a Personal Collections of learning material. Searching and organization is pretty simple.

Have a taste of the MERLOT Health Science Portal at:

http://healthsciences.merlot.org/index.html

Lawrence G. The content of Wikipedia is free, and is written collaboratively by people from all around the world. It is the central focus of the Wikimedia Community that includes over 700 distinct Wikis in hundreds of languages.

A Wiki is a collaborative effort with articles written by individuals from around the world using wiki software that allows content to be added or changed by anyone. As a result, Wikipedia is a dynamic work that is always growing, always changing. This approach, however, is not without its problems. I personally know some educators, including librarians, who will not use or recommend Wikipedia.

However, LibraryJournal.com conducted an evaluation of the validity of Wikipedia by three professional librarians. Their conclusion was:

While there are still reasons to proceed with caution when using a resource that takes pride in limited professional management, many encouraging signs suggest that (at least for now) Wikipedia may be granted the librarian’s seal of approval.

Personally, I love Wikipedia and use it daily. It is the best way to find information quickly. I would not cite Wikipedia for academic publication, but I find that the quick overview is usually what I need. Articles that have some depth to them generally have citation of sources and also links to other sources on the topic.

To utilize Wikipedia, use the search box on the left side of their home page. For example, typing in “Chattanooga” will give you a pretty detailed look at our city. The contents for this article include sections on: History; Economy; Politics, government, and law; Education; Health care; Culture and Tourism; Demographics; Geography; Transportation; Media and communications; Notable residents; Sister cities; Other communities named Chattanooga; and External links.

I have contributed to Wikipedia, including developing new articles and providing minor edits and additions to extant articles. In addition, I have recently added a couple of dozen photos to articles. You can see one of my photos by searching for “Grand Traverse Lighthouse.”

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uterlanger.blogspot.com/2007/01/to-wiki-or-not-to-wiki-i-wiki.html' title='To Wiki or Not to Wiki? I started using it about a month ago, and I am completely hooked. My personal photo collection on Flickr has over a thousand photos. The beauty of this tool is that it allows you to do more than upload photos to the web for storage and viewing. The organizational power of Flickr is impressive. You can arrange your photos into named sets and connect any appropriate photos to user groups within Flickr. The groups can be your own creation, or you can join existing groups.

But, the true power of Flickr comes from the ability to "tag" photos. A tag (sometimes known to Web folks as a meta-tag) is a descriptive word that identifies a photo. For example, a photo of the exterior of Erlanger's Baroness Campus could be tagged as "erlanger," "chattanooga" "hospital," "healthcare", "hamiltoncounty," and "trauma." Within Flickr, a search by these words will take you to the photo.

Flickr also is a social network. Through the groups feature, or by specifically inviting participants to join as a Flickr contact, you will see their photos as well as them seeing yours. You send each potential contact an email with a link to Flickr. If they are not interested, they can safely ignore the invitation.

Flickr also is very smart in terms of digital image rights and privacy. Any image can be identified as "public," that is, anyone can see it, or as "private," with only friends and family allowed. Further, the intellectual property rights of your photos can be completely controlled through legal restrictions and permissions set up through Creative Commons. If you want people to use your photos, but only with attribution, that is one option.

Recently, Flickr expanded its free service to allow users to upload up to 100 MB per month. That is a lot of images. Paid subscription users have no limits on how many pictures they upload and no space limit either - this for $25 per year.

For Flickr details, go to: http://www.flickr.com

I set up at Flickr site for the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga at Erlanger, if you want to view the photo collection, go to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/utcomerlanger/

Lawrence G. It is a social bookmarking website that lets one store bookmarks online and thus access the same bookmarks from any computer. With del.icio.us, you use tags to manage bookmarks (sometime called favorites).

The main features include the ability to:

Store links to favorite websites and add tags to make them searchable and easy to arrange in groups.

Share favorites with friends, family, coworkers, and the del.icio.us community of users.

Explore new things. Everything on del.icio.us is someone's favorite -- they've already done the work of finding it. So del.icio.us is full of bookmarks about technology, entertainment, useful information, and more. Explore and enjoy.

Once again, this is a Web 2.0 application that uses "tags" to help keep things organized. When you see that "cloud" of your tags, the tag terms that have the greatest frequency appear in larger type. A simple click on any tag shows all of your bookmarks that you have tagged with that term. You can also see all the other bookmarks from all del.icio.us users.

Another interesting feature is the "Tagometer" that lets visitors can click on a "widget" that keeps up with on who bookmarked your Web page, when they did it, and how they tagged it.
I think that groups who are evaluating Web sites or otherwise sharing information about Web sites will really benefit from the network functions in del.icio.us as well.

Lawrence G.
